AFTER MOVING TO NEW YORK CITY, I WAS STRUCK BY HOW ESSENTIAL IT IS TO OWN A PAIR OF SHADES THAT CAN BE USED TO NAVIGATE EVERY SITUATION YOU’RE THRUST INTO WHILE LIVING IN A BUSTLING CITY. THUS, MY VISION FOR FUNCTIONAL EYEWEAR THAT NEVER COMPROMISES ONE’S CHARACTER AND UNIQUE STYLE, GAVE BIRTH TO THE FIRST COLLECTION OF NESSY KHEM EYEWEAR.”

A TALK WITH NESSY KHEM x 33 MAGAZINE
Describe yourself as a designer and how did you start?
The story of where I come from is illustrative of my heritage and my creativity. I was born and raised in France along with my four younger siblings by my Tunisian father and my Moroccan mother. My mother has always been stylish and told me to express my own style. As a child, I never really understood what it meant to be unique and wanted to be like everyone else. But the more I started to experiment with fashion, the more I began to curate my own look. I began to fall in love with fashion and the way it allowed me to express my personality and mood of the day.
How do you manage the creativity process exactly?
I always brainstorm first. I dedicate two days of research to the development of the brand. But the truth is, my mind is always working day and night to plan out what I’m trying to achieve, especially at night.

When did you land your first internship and what was the most valuable thing you learned from this experience?
My first internship was at Albright Fashion Library, an amazing showroom directed by Patricia Black. Patricia was such a supportive mentor and really inspired me. She helped me become more organized and more efficient, as well as gave me incredible insight into the real world of fashion and its networking.
What was your first job out of college, and how did you land that position?
When working at Albright in New York, I got to network with many people in the fashion world. I landed my first job when I received a call from a person, I help many times in the showroom they asked me to work with a stylist for Vogue Italia.
What was the biggest rookie mistake you made when just starting out?
I made the mistake to gather too much information and advices from wherever I could, and probably got a little confused. I learned the hard way that if I wanted something, I had to get it myself, listen to my intuition. That’s when I decided to do my own research, took a plane for Japan to explore and find the best factory. It took me a lot of courage to go alone, but I feel this is the way, any amazing story start like that no? 🙂
What’s the main impact of social media in fashion industry in both ways, fashion buying and brand marketing?
Social media is a substantial fast tool for connecting with people by sharing your creativity in real time. My philosophy is to put out quality content over quantity. Social media has completely changed the game for creatives; anyone can control the image of their brand at a tap of a finger and be able to visualize their brand in ways unseen before. What is your favorite and NON-favorite part about being part of the fashion industry?
My favorite part of the fashion industry is being in New York inspired by the street itself! New Yorkers have so much style that I get an inside look in the trends of tomorrow. When I arrived here ten years ago, I was amazed by all the different personalities I saw. I felt like I was free to be anything I wanted!
My non-favorite part of the fashion industry is probably how seasonal it is. Specifically, for accessories like eyewear, we don’t need scheduled seasons since eyewear is always needed. I want my brand Nessy Khem to be where the sun rises and shines.
Can you tell us how your brand makes a difference in fashion industry?
It took me a while to find a way to stand out from other eyewear brands and differentiate myself so that my chain was not attached to a piece of plastic. Thus, I developed Nessy Khem’s elegant detachable chain so that the wearer could have two accessories in one with a unique, luxury presentation, elevating your face like a perfect jewelry.
What do you think is the biggest challenge for a fashion designer?
The biggest challenge for a designer is learning how to balance all the hats on one head. In a time where social media dominates, you want to establish yourself not only being a designer but also being a personality. This isn’t always the easiest. I am a pretty private person, so I like to design eyewear that does the speaking for itself.
Define sustainable concept nowadays in fashion industry in five words.
Circular – Environmental Sustainability – Better economy – Better ecology – New culture
How do you think sustainable can play an important role in fashion industry?
It is fundamental that we change the way we buy fashion. Trying to be sustainable is an opportunity in itself for all of us to become more creative by revamping and playing around with used clothes, to give them a new life. I always play with my vintage pieces and have so much fun being inventive by adding and cutting.
What do you think about the opportunity of selling your collections online nowadays?
Nowadays, connecting with your customers is key to gaining a better understanding of your clienteles. By selling online, I am able to gain feedback from customers that are important to developing my next designs.
Imagine that you must write a letter to your FUTURE SELF. What would you write?
Keep going Ness, don’t stop, don’t look back, continue to love the way you do, stay honest, be curious, and true to yourself.
