TRNDY STUDIOS, A CONVERSATION WITH Tymir Barksdale

TRNDY STUDIOS is a young streetwear label focused on high-tech fabrics with a deep underground street culture. Its founder, Tymir Barksdale, has elevated the concept of aesthetic streetwear with strong references to New York City’s street life. The collection has the main focus on diversity and genderless and is composed by unique pieces like sweaters, bomber jackets, hoodies and t-shirts. Interesting details like long sleeves and two-tone panelling are seen on the garments.

An exclusive conversation with Tymir Barksdale, founder and designer of TRNDY STUDIOS:

Describe yourself as a designer and how did you start? 

I’m in African-American designer got started by designing hoodies & etc for an entertainment group. Seen the reaction we were getting and the demand for the merchandise opened my eyes to something bigger.

How do you manage the creativity process exactly?

Literally by taking it one day at a time I do most of the creative work or oversee it so we take our time to make sure things are perfect.

When did you land your first internship and what was the most valuable thing you learned from this experience?

In 2017 i got a random email to join this mastered program based in London. The most valuable thing I learned was the importance of marketing campaigns.

What was your first job out of college, and how did you land that position? 

Unfortunately haven’t worked a job out of college never got a chance to go.

What was the biggest rookie mistake you made when just starting out?

Biggest rookie mistake I made starting out I was doing my own printing & I printed the design backwards.

What’s the main impact of social media in fashion industry in both ways, fashion buying and brand marketing?

Now days i think social media gives you the maximum exposure with the right branding. People are always on their phones looking for something new witch eventually leads to sales.

What is your favorite and NON-favorite part about being part of the fashion industry?

My favorite part is that it gives me a chance to express my ideas my non favorite part is the fact that people will replicate your ideas.

Can you tell us how your brand makes a difference in fashion industry?

I believe we will make deference with our approach and pushing forward innovation ideas on how to wear clothes in today world.

What do you think is the biggest challenge for a fashion designer?

I believe the biggest challenge is getting the world to buy into your idea or vision for the brand is the challenge.

How do you think sustainable can play an important role in fashion industry?

I believe that’s one most important roles because it creates standards for us to follow. More importantly guarantee we produce high quality to the best of our capabilities.

What do you think about the opportunity of selling your collections online nowadays?

I think it’s a brilliant opportunity everyone’s online constantly & it’s a way to create residual income I think it’s dope.

Imagine that you must write a letter yo your FUTURE SELF. What would you write?

Dear future self I know you’er doing big things now you came a long way from the guy you were. hope you stay true to yourself continue to motivate & inspire the youth & keep God first.
