SHŌJO SHŌSHETSU is inspired by Japanese “girls novels” from the 70’s and 80’s – shot on film.
(Japanese: xxx, lit. “girls’ novel”) is a genre of Japanese popular fiction aimed at an audience of girls culture that emerged in the early 20th century. The genre has been published across literary formats, including novels, short stories, essays, and memoirs.

Shōsetsu became the accepted word used to translate the English word and Western concept of novel into Japanese. Subsequently it was used to mean a novel or any form of prose narrative fiction, story, tale, or romance. While the category was initially dominated by male manga artists, the emergence and eventual dominance of female artists beginning in the 1960s and 1970s led to a period of significant creative innovation, and the development of more graphically and thematically complex stories.
”Lately I have been immersed in Japanese cinema from the turn of the last century and it has been a major energy boost to meet these heroines, aggressive and sexy, who accomplish missions and fall in love at the same time. I wanted to recreate some of this scenario in my studio. A pink javelin, gorgeous nails, dresses and guns. Fantasizing about this universe, I shot the following “characters” and stories – posters inspired by imaginary films that I would certainly love to watch and make.” – Cinthya Cabrera, Director & Photographer
