Katya, your creative journey begins in Lviv, a city steeped in rich cultural heritage. Can you delve into specific experiences from your childhood in Lviv that sparked your passion for textiles and weaving? I carry within me the history and geography of the place of my upbringing. The narrow streets of my native city, its stories and contradictions, are all part of me, they flow in my veins. My brand Silk&Soul is inseparable from my early experiences in Lviv. Growing up in a city rich with history and vibrant cultural influences, I was constantly surrounded by the beauty of architecture, art and local craftsmanship. I spent countless hours exploring markets, workshops and numerous museums and art exhibitions. The intricate patterns of traditional weavings, embroidery and folk art captivated my imagination. Those influences resonate deeply with my work and artistic identity. My Tree of Life collection is a heartfelt celebration of the art of paper cutting traditions from around the world, drawing inspiration from my own experiences practicing this craft as a child in Lviv, transforming paper into something beautiful using just scissors. Lviv is a vibrant tapestry of many cultures. Its rich diversity is evident in its architecture, cuisine, and arts. The city’s streets are filled with stories, while festivals celebrating music, art, and food highlight its multicultural heritage. Lviv’s dynamic atmosphere always fostered creativity and collaboration, making it a cultural crossroads where traditions coexist and inspire one another. These early experiences profoundly shaped my identity as an artist and instilled in me a deep appreciation for the craftsmanship and the narratives behind textiles. I learned that every thread could tell a story and this understanding became the foundation of my artistic journey. Learning to weave at the age of fourteen has profoundly influenced my brand’s DNA by instilling core values of craftsmanship, quality and sustainability.
Throughout your career, were there specific mentors, family members, or artists whose guidance and support profoundly shaped your artistic vision? Could you share particular lessons or experiences with them that have left an indelible mark on your approach to both life and design?
My artistic journey has been deeply influenced by my parents’ unwavering support. One memorable moment is when I surprised them by drawing on the walls of our newly renovated apartment. Instead of reprimanding me, they celebrated my creativity, allowing me to express myself freely.
My mother, in particular, was a creative force on a budget. She repurposed everyday items and was amazing at accessorizing, teaching me the value of resourcefulness long before sustainability became trendy. Through her example, I learned to seek inspiration and find beauty in the ordinary. This lesson has stayed with me, guiding my artistic journey and shaping my view of the world.
Considering your journey, who were your early artistic heroes or movements that inspired you before you embarked on your journey to the United States? How did these influences inform your aesthetic sensibilities, and how are they reflected in the motifs and themes present in your current collections?
Growing up in the former Soviet Union, my exposure to artistic movements was largely confined to social realism, which emphasized the struggles of the working class aligned with state ideals. Access to Western art was restricted, so I didn’t encounter modernism or abstract expressionism until later in life. This narrow focus shaped my early understanding of creativity. When I moved to USA, I gained exposure to information that was denied to me earlier. My aesthetic sensibilities were shaped by folk and decorative arts, offering a vibrant source of inspiration and authenticity that is evident in my collections.
You mentioned that your early education in weaving and textile design established a solid foundation for your later work. Can you discuss some specific textile techniques you mastered during your studies in Lviv and how these traditional methods continue to influence your design philosophy today? Are there any particular techniques you feel are crucial to your identity as a designer?
The art of weaving influences my design philosophy today. I draw inspiration from the weavers of the past, who created garments from simple shapes, maximizing every inch of fabric and minimizing waste. Their approach reflects a deep respect for materials and understanding of the importance of efficiency in design. This resonates with my own work. I aim to create designs that are both beautiful and functional, ensuring that nothing goes to waste. Some other fiber art techniques I explored are: tapestry weaving, jacquard weaving, silk painting, felting, embroidery. Silk painting, in particular, is something I have done all my life. Digital printing opened up new possibilities for reproducing art on many different surfaces and it is something that is crucial to my design process and brand identity.
How do elements of your Ukrainian heritage manifest in the narratives and aesthetics of your current designs with Silk & Soul? Can you highlight any specific pieces in your collection that serve as a tribute to your roots or that embody a cultural narrative significant to you?
The square poppy silk scarf is a heartfelt tribute to my Ukrainian roots, featuring poppies, a bird and golden wheat. The poppy symbolizes resilience and remembrance, while the bird represents freedom, and the wheat embodies abundance and connection to the land. Made from luxurious silk, the scarf offers a soft, elegant drape. It was a showstopper during Paris Fashion Week and was dedicated to my friends, classmates and family suffering in the war, symbolizing resilience and hope.
Moving from Ukraine to the United States represents a significant transition. What challenges did you face in balancing the integrity of your artistic voice while adapting to the diverse and rapidly changing environment of American culture? How did these experiences influence the evolution of your design style?
Moving to USA was a transformative experience that required me to support myself while learning a new language and adapting to a diverse, rapidly changing culture. As I immersed myself in American life, I encountered a rich tapestry of influences that broadened my artistic horizons, but it was only years later that I was able to continue my education and work on my artistic voice. I am not sure how these experiences influenced the evolution of my artistic style, but they taught me patience, perseverance and resilience.
Through a confluence of your early experiences and cultural inspirations, how did you formulate the overarching vision for your brand, Silk & Soul? What core message do you aspire to convey through your work, and how do you hope your designs impact wearers and viewers on an emotional level?
