Her latest raffia collection, featuring a generously shaped hobo bag and a structured matching pouch, is a study in elegance born from nature, culture, and community. At the heart of Bhavna’s design philosophy lies her Indian heritage. Raised amid the rich cultural diversity of India, she draws deeply from the traditional crafts and philosophies of her homeland. While this raffia collection embraces a global, minimal aesthetic, the values embedded in its making are undeniably Indian. “Even when I work with materials like raffia, which aren’t native to India, I approach the design process with the same reverence and patience that Indian artisans bring to their crafts,” she has said. The discipline of handwork, attention to tactile beauty, and the philosophy of slow, intentional creation are all deeply inspired by Indian traditions.
Her earlier projects, including experimenting with tie-dye, batik on leather, and regional embroideries, show a designer rooted in heritage but reaching outward- an ethos that continues with this collection. While the hobo and pouch may appear simple, they are layered with meaning: the form is contemporary, but the soul lies in the way they are made, with care, integrity, and purpose.
Bhavna’s connection to craftsmanship doesn’t end with her own designs. During her undergraduate years, she worked on a preservation initiative for Usta Kala, an endangered craft from Bikaner, in collaboration with the Indian Ministry of Textiles. The project involved working directly with local artisans to adapt their traditional floral motifs into a contemporary format for fashion accessories. That experience, she says, shaped her commitment to ensuring that traditional skills are not only preserved but adapted for modern audiences, without dilution.
In her view, artisans are not just skilled workers; they are cultural archivists. “In today’s fashion landscape, their role is more crucial than ever. They remind us of the humanity behind every stitch, every thread,” she shares. Through collaborative projects and small-batch productions, Bhavna consistently makes space for these makers to be seen, valued, and economically empowered.
What sets her apart is an interdisciplinary approach that weaves fashion with illustration and philosophy. A trained fashion designer with a background in leather goods, Bhavna also spends time drawing, writing, and reflecting. These practices inform her visual language, from the curve of a bag to the proportions of a pouch. “Philosophy gives me the lens to question why we create; illustration helps me visualize that answer before it becomes physical,” she explains. This results in pieces that are not just functional or beautiful, but thoughtful, imbued with intention and quiet storytelling.
The narrative behind this raffia collection, for instance, is centered on the theme of “Earthbound Elegance.” It evokes the simplicity of nature and the structure of tradition. The warm beige tone of the raffia evokes sun-drenched landscapes, while the brown leather speaks of earth and roots. These design choices are Bhavna’s way of reminding the wearer to stay grounded, to move slowly, and to choose objects that carry meaning.
Through her work, she hopes to foster cultural dialogue, particularly between the deeply layered world of Indian craftsmanship and the minimal, global aesthetics of contemporary fashion. “I think design has the potential to bridge worlds. When someone carries one of my pieces, they may not know the full story, but they feel something, the texture, the weight, the intention. That emotional connection can become a gateway to curiosity about other cultures and traditions.”
