AMÆMI – LAST SHELL OF THE WORLD

AMÆMI is an Italian-born interdisciplinary sound researcher and ritual performer, currently based between Milan and Granada, Southern Spain. Grounded in philosophical studies and somatic spiritual practices, her practice unfolds at the intersection of embodied listening, sound research, and ancestral memory, embracing a holistic approach to artistic creation.

Her work explores sound as a liminal space: simultaneously a listening experience, a performative act, and a symbolic gesture. Through the fusion of ancient ritual practices and contemporary sound design, AMÆMI creates immersive sonic environments where the tribal and the modern coexist. Mantra-like vocal textures, organic instruments, and live electronics merge into ceremonial soundscapes that invite the listener into a sensorial, intimate, and transformative experience. At the heart of her research lies the desire to dissolve the boundary between the sacred and the everyday, allowing ritual to re-emerge as a living, embodied practice within contemporary culture.

Last Shell of the World, her new EP, marks a further deepening of this research. Developed over the past year, the project focuses exclusively on ceramic instruments and water recordings captured through hydrophones. All sounds originate from handcrafted ceramic objects: some played acoustically, others functioning as vessels containing water, whose internal movements are recorded from within. In this process, ceramic becomes a resonant body and water an active compositional force, extended by hydrophone recordings from rivers and fountains located in places of personal and ancestral significance to the artist.

At the core of the EP lies water as origin and transformation: a feminine, mutable flow through which the sacred continuously shifts form. Drawing inspiration from oceanic myths, archetypes of abundance and fluidity, Mediterranean folk rituals, and personal ancestral memory, Last Shell of the World embraces a holistic vision of the divine. Ceramic, with its deep connection to earth, and water become both medium and meaning, evoking purification, renewal, and the presence of a living, feminine sacred. The work unfolds as an immersive, ceremonial sonic experience, where the human, elemental, and technological enter into dialogue.

The EP was anticipated by the single Funtìa, a piece rooted in childlike playfulness and intuitive listening. Inspired by ancient Mediterranean water rituals – particularly those from Abruzzo, connected to the artist’s family roots and her grandfather’s village, Fontecchio (“small source”), the track evokes the presence of a sacred source-goddess, a force of purification and renewal. Funtìa unfolds like an oneiric fairy tale, recalling a time when communities gathered around village fountains, invoking their living power.

With Last Shell of the World, AMÆMI invites listeners into a fluid ritual of sound: an intimate encounter with water, memory, and the feminine sacred, reimagined through contemporary sonic practice.
