IN CONVERSATION WITH L8 STUDIO

Perhaps the future of fashion lies in increasingly valuing independent brands, as they are the ones driving innovation and creativity today. They often face the most challenging hurdles in the industry. We need a brand like L8 Studio for many reasons, including its commitment to craftsmanship and the appreciation for the research process that underpins a collection from an independent label. What would fashion be without independent brands?

L8 Studio, founded by Ludovic Valery Graziani in Corsica in 2020, exemplifies this through a seamless mix of technical innovation and sophisticated design. Positioned as a trailblazer in the world of outerwear and techwear, the brand has developed garments that embody both functionality and modern elegance. L8 Studio‘s identity is a steadfast commitment to precision and innovation. Known for its signature iron-stamped closures, the brand successfully combines utility with a distinct visual appeal. Each piece is designed with meticulous care, employing advanced tailoring techniques alongside luxurious, cutting-edge fabrics. The result is apparel that is as stylish as it is performance-driven.

Since the begging, L8 Studio has attracted a dedicated following of discerning customers who seek clothing that marries practicality with timeless aesthetics. The brand stands out for its tactical outerwear combined with refined craftsmanship, offering signature hammered metal zippers alongside pioneering fabric innovations. Handcrafted in Italy using precision metals, every closure glides effortlessly while standing up to daily wear and tear, exemplifying the brand’s uncompromising quality standard.  The closures, evolved from mere components to symbolic emblems, encapsulate L8 Studio‘s essence and define each piece. With each detail, the zipper communicates a story of performance, refinement, and permanence.

Every closure is cast in solid iron and meticulously shaped, bearing a sculptural presence that elevates function into ornamentation. The chrome-polished surface reflects light with enduring brilliance, making each piece not just a garment, but a wearable work of art.

In Italy, craftsmanship is revered as a transmission of skills and dedication passed down through generations. This rich heritage fuels the creation of zippers that are truly unique, merging age-old traditions with contemporary technical mastery. The craftsmanship at L8 Studio is underscored by a commitment to precision. Each zipper is handcrafted, shaped by the skilled hands of artisans who embody unwavering attention to detail. Every piece emerges from the creative pulse of Paris, where the measurements, patterns, and cuts are meticulously refined. This obsessive precision ensures that balance is achieved in each design, as nothing is left to chance.

Laboratory-driven research and development in tandem with in-house finishing maintain consistency in feel, functionality, and weather protection season after season. The fabrics, sourced from Como—a region steeped in textile tradition—reflect meticulous weaving and finishing, carried on by generations of artisans. This lineage transforms innovation into tangible touch and drape, combining precision with durability you can trust. L8 Studio extensively uses bonded nylon constructions, outer fabrics, breathable membranes, and protective layers that provide wind resistance, comfort, and long-term shape retention. The result is a harmonious balance of protection and elegance, delivering water-repellent performance without compromising on texture, movement, or silhouette.

L8 Studio is a reminder that the future of fashion relies on the creativity and courage of independent brands—those who dare to challenge the norms and redefine elegance in the modern age. What would fashion be without the trailblazers like L8 Studio?

IN CONVERSATION WITH LUDOVIC VALERY, FOUNDER OF L8 STUDIO

Can you share the initial inspiration behind creating L8 Studio? What personal experiences or observations led you to merge tactical outerwear with refined craftsmanship? As a founder, your journey often shapes the ethos of the brand. How did your background in fashion and design influence your vision for L8 Studio, and what specific moments made you realize the need for this unique blend in the outerwear market?

The initial inspiration behind L8 Studio was very simple: to create. To create garments with a true sense of flow, pieces that I personally wanted to wear. From the beginning, I was driven by the idea of designing something timeless, something that could exist beyond trends.
Of course, the positioning of L8 Studio, especially in outerwear, evolved over time. It became more precise, more intentional. But fundamentally, I would say that what shaped the brand the most is where I come from, and even more than that, the path I’ve taken.

L8 Studio carries the spirit of an island, Corsica. That environment, its rawness, its contrast between strength and elegance, has deeply influenced my vision. At the same time, Paris played a crucial role in refining it. It’s where I studied, where I was exposed to different perspectives, where I could observe, exchange, and absorb a wide range of influences, from design to materials, to the way people interact with clothing in different environments and weather conditions. I can’t point to one specific moment where everything became clear. It wasn’t a sudden realization. It was more instinctive than that. I felt what I wanted to wear, and at the same time, I felt what people were missing.

In your opinion, what key elements define the balance between tactical functionality and refined craftsmanship in your designs? How do you ensure that the garments not only serve practical purposes but also embody sophistication and elegance? Can you discuss specific design features that exemplify this duality?

For me, the balance between tactical functionality and refined craftsmanship lies in versatility. A garment should adapt to the way you live, it should respond to different situations without ever losing its identity. At L8 Studio, “tactical” doesn’t only mean technical features; it means being prepared for real life. The fabrics we use allow the garments to perform in various conditions, whether it’s cold, wind, or rain. At the same time, the refinement comes from the construction, the proportions, and the attention to detail, which allow the same piece to transition into a more elevated, even formal environment. You can wear it during the day in harsh weather, and still feel perfectly appropriate at a dinner in the evening. That duality is one of the core strengths of L8 Studio.

Craftsmanship is truly at the heart of everything we do. All pieces are handmade in Paris, which brings a level of precision, care, and rarity. The limited quantities are not a strategy, they are a consequence of this approach. Each garment carries time, intention, and a certain uniqueness. A good example of this balance is our Double Collar Overshirt. The piece combines a strong structural element, the double collar,  with technical nylon, including waterproof properties and functional storage pockets. It’s designed to be practical, protective, and adaptable, while maintaining a clean, refined silhouette. It embodies exactly what L8 Studio stands for: a garment that can exist in multiple worlds, without compromise.

The hammered metal zippers are a signature feature of L8 Studio. What aspects of these closures distinguish them from traditional zippers, and how do they align with the brand’s overall aesthetic? Can you explain the design process behind these closures, from concept to creation, and how they contribute to the garment’s performance as well as its visual impact?

The hammered metal zippers are, in fact, one of the main signatures of L8 Studio.

What sets them apart from traditional zippers is their all‑metal construction and the distinctive “hammered” finish, which gives them a tactile, almost sculptural quality. Each piece is custom‑made in Italy, with the zipper tape, slider, and teeth all developed specifically for the brand. The result is a closure that isn’t just functional, but instantly recognizable especially with that high‑contrast, bright‑silver finish that stands out against the more restrained fabrics.

From the beginning, our intention was to create a recognizable element without relying on a visible logo. Instead of printing a logo, we wanted a recognizable slider a detail that someone could identify as L8 Studio at a glance. The design process started with checking the form and proportions of the zipper, then working closely with Italian hardware specialists to iterate on the metal finish, weight, and feel. We focused on how the zipper moves along the garment, how it sits against the fabric, and how it catches light in different contexts. In practice, these closures also contribute directly to performance. The metal construction makes them robust and durable, while the precise engineering ensures they slide smoothly even on heavy technical pieces. Visually, they create a subtle but clear focal point on the garment, anchoring the silhouette, reinforcing the brand’s identity, and adding a touch of industrial refinement that aligns perfectly with L8 Studio’s overall aesthetic: functional and meticulously crafted.

Your collection emphasizes both durability and modern elegance. What materials do you prioritize when crafting your garments, and how do they contribute to achieving this vision? Could you elaborate on the qualities of the Italian-woven fabrics you choose and the technical innovations that enhance the durability and texture of these materials?

For L8 Studio, durability and modern elegance start with the fabric. We work almost exclusively with nylon, mostly recycled nylon, and we always begin with the design itself before choosing the fabrics. The fabric is the priority; the silhouette then adapts to its properties and performance.

Over the years, we’ve limited ourselves to roughly five new textiles per season, all sourced from Italy. These Italian‑woven nylons are highly sophisticated: many are triple‑membrane constructions, water‑repellent, wind‑resistant, and designed to regulate temperature and enhance comfort in different climates. They’re not only technical but also visually refined, with a subtle sheen and clean drape that support the brand’s understated elegance. Beyond the base material, these fabrics are engineered with technical innovations that reinforce durability and texture. Advanced finishes give them inherent water‑repellency, while the layered structure improves insulation and breathability. The result is garments that feel lightweight and soft to the hand, yet offer serious protection against wind, cold, and rain. In this way, the fabrics themselves become the quiet foundation of our vision: long‑lasting pieces that perform in real life, yet always carry that quiet sense of modern sophistication.

Precision is a cornerstone of L8 Studio’s identity. How does this commitment to precision manifest throughout your design and manufacturing processes? From initial sketches to the final fit, how do you maintain impeccable quality and attention to detail, and what systems do you have in place to ensure consistency across each piece?

Precision is not just an aesthetic choice for us, it’s the backbone of how we work. The entire process, from the first sketch to the final garment, is kept entirely in‑house. This means we control every step: drawing, prototyping, material testing, and final production, all within the same studio ecosystem. Many pieces go through months, sometimes more than a year, of constant adjustment. We refine the pattern, test the construction, and rework the details until every element feels absolutely coherent. The garment is adapted, rethought, and readjusted over several months, so that what you see in the end is the result of a long, deliberate evolution rather than a single decision.

Italian craftsmanship is renowned globally. How does this heritage inform your approach to collaboration with artisans, and what do you believe it adds to the final product ? Can you discuss the relationship you cultivate with the artisans and how their skills and traditions influence the designs and innovation at L8 Studio?

Italian and Parisian craftsmanship is more than a reference for us, it’s a way of working that aligns completely with L8 Studio’s values. I chose to build the brand around honesty, heritage, and a deep respect for traditional savoir‑faire. Today’s audience is looking for products that are not only well designed, but also rooted in real expertise and a passionate, dedicated team. That’s exactly what craftsmanship brings to the table.

I have a close, collaborative relationship with all of the artisans we work with. We discuss each project in detail, from the very first idea to the technical feasibility of the construction. Nothing is taken for granted; we question how a piece can be made, how the fabric will behave, and how the details will be executed. This dialogue ensures that the design is always aligned with the artisan’s skills and the possibilities of the material. Their knowledge and traditions directly influence our patterns, finishes, and construction choices, often inspiring new ways to innovate within a disciplined framework. At L8 Studio, innovation doesn’t come from rejecting tradition, but from working inside it, refining it, updating it, and translating it into garments that feel both precise and timeless. In that sense, Italian craftsmanship doesn’t just improve the final product; it shapes the way we think, create, and build the brand.

Innovation plays a critical role in your design philosophy. How do you incorporate cutting-edge technologies in both fabric selection and garment construction while ensuring they align with L8 Studio’s aesthetic? What challenges arise when integrating modern technologies while respecting the traditional craftsmanship that L8 Studio is built upon?

For us, innovation is never an end in itself; it’s a tool that must serve the design and the brand’s identity. We incorporate cutting‑edge technologies, especially in fabric selection and garment construction, but always through the lens of tradition and craftsmanship. In other words, we adapt modern technology to the artisan and to the heritage, rather than letting it replace it. The main challenge is to introduce new technologies without disrupting the balance: maintaining the warmth and authenticity of traditional craftsmanship while enhancing durability, precision, and functionality. When we test a new process or textile, we do it with the artisans, discussing feasibility, feel, and long‑term behaviour. That dialogue ensures that innovation never feels imposed; instead, it becomes a natural extension of the way we already work, sharp, controlled, and rooted in real skill.

L8 Studio has accumulated a devoted following. What do you believe sets your brand apart from others in the techwear and outerwear sectors, and why do you think customers gravitate towards your pieces? Are there specific attributes or values that resonate most with your audience, and how do you engage with them to build this loyal community?

I do believe there is something very specific about L8 Studio. It’s not just about function or silhouette; it’s about belonging. People don’t just buy a garment, they identify with the brand and feel part of its story. When someone buys a piece, they’re not only taking a garment, they’re taking a piece of the legacy. That sense of continuity and shared identity is very important to us. There is also a real faith in L8 Studio, people trust the way we work, the way we construct, and the way we develop every piece. This consistency, this attention to detail, and the fact that everything is made in a very controlled, almost at‑elier way, creates a strong emotional connection. Our audience is not just looking for outerwear; they’re looking for objects that feel honest, intentional, and built to last.

To build this community, we choose to stay close to our customers, through direct dialogue, limited releases, and a clear, coherent narrative across every collection. We don’t over‑explain; instead, we let the work speak, and we invite people to read between the lines. That approach fosters a sense of belonging: L8 Studio feels like a circle of people who share the same values, precision, discretion, and quiet confidence, rather than just a brand.

How do you see the future of techwear and outerwear changing? Where do you believe L8 Studio fits into this evolving fashion stage? How do you foresee challenges such as sustainability and technological advancements influencing your approach to design in the coming years?

I see the future of techwear and outerwear moving toward more meaningful functionality, pieces that truly respond to real life, not just imagery. At the same time, people are seeking garments with intention, identity, and longevity. In this space, L8 Studio fits as a brand that values precision, honesty, and long‑term thinking, where every piece is rigorously tested and refined. Sustainability and technological advancements will be central to our evolution. We’re already focused on recycled nylon and durable constructions, and we’ll keep pushing toward more responsible materials and smarter processes, without sacrificing the craftsmanship and human touch that define the brand. For us, the future is about using technology to refine, not replace, tradition.

Sustainability is increasingly important in fashion. How does L8 Studio address sustainability in terms of material sourcing and production practices? Can you share specific strategies or processes that ensure your brand minimizes its environmental impact while still delivering high-quality garments?

Sustainability is central to how we think about L8 Studio, even if it’s not always the loudest part of the story. We prioritize recycled fabrics whenever possible, especially recycled nylon, and we carefully evaluate which materials are truly necessary for each piece. Before cutting, the pattern is analyzed digitally so that the layout is optimized on the fabric roll. This reduces waste by minimizing excess off‑cuts and ensuring that each yard of fabric is used as efficiently as possible. We also look for opportunities to reuse leftover materials so that nothing is easily discarded.

In this way, sustainability isn’t an afterthought; it’s built into the process, from the initial pattern to the final cut. Our goal is to deliver ultra high‑quality, long‑lasting garments while keeping the environmental footprint as low as possible, without compromising the precision and integrity of the design.

What are some significant challenges you’ve encountered in the pursuit of creating garments that harmonize performance-driven attributes with sophisticated design? How do these challenges shape your creative process, and what lessons have you learned along the way that influence your work today?

One of the biggest challenges is simply bringing the garment to life as I imagined it. There’s often a tension between the initial idea and the technical reality of construction, finding the right balance between performance, silhouette, and precision can be difficult. The cutting‑edge shapes and functional details we aim for are not always easy to execute, and that sometimes requires going back and reworking the pattern several times.

These challenges deeply shape our creative process. They push us to be more precise, more patient, and more flexible in how we think about form and function. I’m constantly in search of a certain kind of perfection, where every detail feels necessary and intentional. Over time, this has taught us to accept that the process itself is part of the design: the obstacles, the iterations, and the small adjustments are what ultimately give each piece its character and integrity.

Personal connections to your creations are often deep. Can you share an anecdote about a particular piece from your collection that encapsulates the essence of L8 Studio and why it holds special meaning for you? How does this piece reflect the brand’s values and philosophy, and what emotions or stories does it convey to those who wear it?

One of the most meaningful pieces for me is the Curved Jacket. When we created it in 2022, it felt like the first real crystallization of where I wanted L8 Studio to go in terms of design. It expressed that balance we always search for clean, sculptural lines, strong structure, and a quiet, almost invisible functionality.

What really struck me was the immediate reaction from our customers. The connection they felt with the jacket was intense, and the demand has been so strong that it has almost always been out of stock since its release. To me, this shows how the piece also carries the brand’s values: precision, discretion, and a sense of quiet confidence.
