Between the Apollonian and the Dionysian: The ACM x Maison Valentino Industry Project
In a celebration of creativity that transcends the temporal boundaries of fashion, Accademia Costume & Moda proudly presents its latest Industry Project developed in collaboration with the esteemed Maison Valentino. This groundbreaking project, initiated for the Master in Alta Moda, Fashion Design, invites us to explore the intricate relationship between two philosophical archetypes that have shaped our understanding of art and aesthetics: the Apollonian and the Dionysian.
At the heart of this collaboration lies the involvement of 18 talented students who were granted the unique opportunity to work closely with the visionary Alessandro Michele, the Creative Director of Valentino and a distinguished alumnus of Accademia Costume & Moda. Alongside him was the esteemed Yvan Mispelaere, Design Director of Haute Couture at Valentino. This collaboration offered students a rare glimpse into the inner workings of one of the fashion industry’s leading houses, facilitating a deeply impactful dialogue encompassing all facets of the creative process—from the initial brief to the final presentation of their collections.

Under the expert coordination of Santo Costanzo, Head of the Fashion Department at ACM and Coordinator of the Master’s Programme, students embarked on an enriching journey that was as intellectually stimulating as it was creatively demanding. The thematic crux of the project turned on the dynamic interplay between the Apollonian ideals of order, discipline, and rational thought, exemplified through structure and form, and the Dionysian elements of instinct, transformation, and unfettered expressiveness. This duality, which has influenced artistic creation throughout history, was reinterpreted by students through the lens of contemporary couture.
Through rigorous exploration and experimentation, students delved into the intricate identity codes of the legendary Roman couture maison. They studied artisanal techniques, intricate embellishments, and the principles of sartorial construction that are hallmarks of Valentino’s timeless elegance. This research served as the foundation for their collections, each one reflecting a personal artistic journey while simultaneously engaging with the contemporary context of fashion.
The ambitious project allowed students to experience every stage of the couture development cycle—transforming abstract ideas into tangible creations. Engaging in intense research, design experimentation, and garment construction, they embraced the complexities of couture craftsmanship. This process included meticulous studies of volume, proportion, and silhouette, as well as hands-on work in the atelier, where moulage, embroidery, and innovative material manipulation came together to breathe life into their visions. The countless hours spent in the studio—through fittings, iterative transformations, and extensive technical research—enabled each student to fully engage with the multilayered language of contemporary Alta Moda.

The distinctive essence of this project emerges from its profound collaborative nature. The engagement with Valentino was not merely decorative or superficial; it was a genuine exchange of ideas and experiences that invited students into the vibrant world of haute couture. For these budding designers, the mentorship provided by esteemed figures like Michele and Mispelaere offered insights into the creative process, charting a pathway from conceptualization to realization. This project was not just about the technical mastery of crafting a couture collection; it was also about the cultivation of an artistic identity. As the students navigated the delicate balance between the Apollonian and the Dionysian, they learned to honor traditional techniques while embracing their instinctive impulses and imaginative visions. This synthesis of structure and spontaneity enriched their creative repertoire, ensuring that their collections stood as expressions of both their heritage and their futures.
Accademia Costume & Moda wishes to extend its heartfelt gratitude to Alessandro Michele, Yvan Mispelaere, and the entire Valentino team for their invaluable contributions to this transformative experience. The months of immersive research, spirited dialogue, and dynamic creative development spent in close proximity to the Maison have profoundly impacted the students, offering them a treasure trove of insights destined to shape their careers and artistic pursuits.
