MUSIC INTERVIEW: BASTIANO

Abbiamo incontrato – e fotografato – l’artista vicentino Luca Bastianello, in arte BASTIANO,  che ci racconta con sincerità le sue paure, il legame con la sua chitarra e come nascono le sue canzoni.

”Mi lascio semplicemente guidare dal momento, non cerco un legame tra le canzoni ma va da se che la base da cui parto svela sempre qualcosa di profondamente personale che spesso si unisce ad altre situazioni.”

Cosi si racconta Luca Bastianello nella nostra intervista. L’artista reinventa ogni volta la propria scrittura, raccontando non solo la musica ma anche il progetto BASTIANO in maniera inedita.

La ricerca della libertà creativa, dell’espressione sincera a tutti i costi sembra essere la stella polare dell’artista, che si avvicina alla figura del cantautore dopo un lungo percorso da bassista in alcune band alternative rock della città in cui vive, Vicenza, Italia. Il tutto nasce in seguito al trascinarsi di un progetto musicale che da lì a poco si sarebbe fermato. Ed é così che BASTIANO si affaccia sulla scena musicale indipendente con un EP dal titolo ‘Stesi sull’asfalto’ , uscito lo scorso Febbraio, dove voce e chitarra incontrano synth, arpeggiatori e loop facendo risaltare una scrittura dei testi matura e diretta.

L’EP ‘Stesi sull’asfalto’ è composto da sei canzoni e racconta le vicissitudini di un individuo che, di fronte agli ostacoli, inizia a pensare a come superarli senza fare troppo rumore. Prodotto da Alberto De Rossi (Alexia, L’Aura, Mistocivo).

Guardando indietro nel passato, quali sono stati alcuni dei tuoi primi ingressi nell’apprezzamento della musica?

A guardare nel passato di certo i miei gusti nel tempo sono molto cambiati però non si possono dimenticare i primi passi. Quando ero adolescente seguivo con molto interesse Litfiba e Marlene Kuntz, due band che mi hanno trasmesso la loro espressività. Capita ancora adesso di ascoltare i loro dischi e cantarli a squarciagola.

Cosa fa fluire i tuoi succhi creativi? 

Ogni volta che inizio a scrivere una canzone la prendo come una sfida. Mi chiedo come sarò in grado di portarla a termine senza cadere nella retorica. Penso che il cercare di migliorarsi volta per volta sia la spinta giusta nel riuscire ad avere quella tranquillità che serve per raggiungere un risultato.

Cosa ti porti dietro dalle esperienze vissute assieme ad una band nel passato e come ti hanno aiutato a formare il tuo percorso da solista? 

Mi porto dietro un bel bagaglio di amicizie, delusioni, rinascite, feste, discussioni, abbracci e tante risate. Fare parte di una band è come andare a vivere da soli, le responsabilità iniziano a pesare quando cerchi di fare le cose sul serio ma se non si rema tutti nella stessa direzione non si va da nessuna parte.

In che modo il tuo singolo-video Gira in testa evoca le emozioni che hai inizialmente scritto per il singolo? Che tipo di emozioni vorresti trasmettere alle persone quando lo ascoltano?

Gira in testa suggerisce sostanzialmente all’ascoltatore di non fasciarsi la testa ancora prima di rompersela. Scoprirsi un po alla volta senza farsi troppe domande, pesare la persona che hai davanti per quello che è e non per quello che vorresti che fosse. Se cadi in questa trappola è probabile che tu perda l’unica chance che hai a disposizione.

Guidaci attraverso il tuo processo di scrittura delle canzoni. Ci sono cose in particolare che vuoi condividere con noi relative a quando hai messo insieme le canzoni per STESI SULL’ASFALTO, il tuo EP di debutto come solista?

Parto sempre da una successione di accordi mentre suono la chitarra. Cerco di fissare una sorta di strofa con un ipotetico ritornello giusto da creare un punto di partenza canticchiando una melodia. In secondo luogo scelgo un argomento o delle parole chiave attorno alle quali sviluppare un testo. 

È importante per te che tutte le canzoni abbiano un filo conduttore o un tema relativo ad un certo periodo o le emozioni sono guidate da un certo caos logico per te?

Mi lascio semplicemente guidare dal momento, non cerco un legame tra le canzoni ma va da se che la base da cui parto svela sempre qualcosa di profondamente personale che spesso si unisce ad altre situazioni.

Cosa ti ha ispirato a scrivere Ad Est e qual è il messaggio che si cela dietro?

Ad est parla di una relazione a distanza e il messaggio che si cela dietro è quello di non prendersi troppo sul serio perché in fondo i chilometri da percorrere sono molti e l’immaginazione corre più veloce del tempo che serve per arrivare al dunque.

Come ritieni che la situazione pandemica abbia influenzato la tua carriera musicale e come l’hai superata?

Il progetto Bastiano è nato durante il primo lockdown proprio per tenere la mente impegnata su nuove emozioni da condividere. Un quotidiano esercizio per scavare dentro a tutte quelle voci a cui non davo troppo ascolto.

Cosa faresti adesso, se non fosse per la tua musica?

Non saprei, non ho mai pensato ad un piano b. Scrivere canzoni mi tiene collegato ad un percorso parallelo dove la direzione viene scelta in base all’umore e alle esperienze che si vivono col passare dei giorni.

Cosa c’è nella tua playlist attuale? 

Led Zeppelin, Miles Davis, Mark Lanegan, QOTSA, Gomez, Marta Sui Tubi, Battisti, Dalla, Afro Funk, Bob Marley, Brunori Sas.

Come musicista, diventa evidente che c’è un’enorme differenza tra il processo creativo e il business. C’è qualcosa nell’industria musicale che cambieresti personalmente?

Sarebbe interessante mantenere attiva solo la piattaforma Bandcamp, unica ad andare in contro agli artisti dando a loro la possibilità di vendere il proprio merchandising al potenziale ascoltatore.

Immagina di dover scrivere una lettera al tuo futuro sé. Cosa scriveresti?

Mi scriverei di restare con i piedi per terra, senza farsi condizionare mai dalla moda del momento. Ragionare con la propria testa ascoltando ciò che di buono esce dalla bocca delle persone e mettere da parte invece chi inquina l’aria con invidia e contenuti banali.

BASTIANO approaches the figure of the songwriter after a long career as a bass player in some alternative rock bands in the city where he lives, Vicenza, Italy. Everything was born following the dragging of a musical project that would soon stop, as he started to write songs without setting a specific goal.

He creates an incredible blend of utopian atmosphere and we are literally in awe of the guitar tones. Lyrically, the songs are wrapped around the emotion of finding something mystic within and for oneself.

His debut ‘Stesi sull’asfalto’ EP released last February, is made up of six songs and narrates the vicissitudes of an individual who, in front of obstacles, begins to think about how to overcome them without making too much noise. Produced by Alberto De Rossi (Alexia, L’Aura, Mistonocivo). With this EP Bastiano faces the independent music scene as a soloist.

Combined with some tribal rhythms on the guitar,  Ad est , is an atmospheric opener, so smooth, fascinating, and harmful, which talks about a long-distance relationship. Campo visivo, a song created to pay homage to an endless friendship. An instinctive bond between dog and man, is a delicious song with mystifying sounds in hushed guitar tones, meanwhile Candida deals with the theme of domestic violence, a metaphoric song of how the human being transforms when he finds himself in the midst of toxic dynamics, questions the nature of love. The song is nuanced with moody melancholic thoughts and sounds. Al citofono is the result of a fleeting encounter. The perception of a time without filters that travels on the wave of winds and some more intimate moments . Gira in testa, a song that speaks of complicity. Oltre, instrumental that closes the EP.

The canon of music that features on this project further cements BASTIANO as one of the most promising Italian artists with a rich and sophisticated lyrics palette, fusing guitar tones and alternative sounds.

Looking back into the past, what were some of your earliest entries into music appreciation?

Looking back, my tastes have certainly changed a lot over time, but the first steps cannot be forgotten. When I was a teenager I followed with great interest Litfiba and Marlene Kuntz, two bands that gave me their expressiveness. It still happens now to listen to their records and sing them out loud.

What makes your creative juices flow?

Whenever I start writing a song I take it as a challenge. I wonder how I will be able to complete it without falling into rhetoric. I think that trying to improve each time is the right push in being able to have that peace of mind that is needed to achieve a result.

What do you bring with you from the experiences you lived together with a band in the past and how did they help you to shape your path as a soloist?

I carry with me a lot of friendships, disappointments, rebirths, parties, discussions, hugs and lots of laughs. Being part of a band is like going to live alone, responsibilities start to weigh when you try to do things seriously but if you don’t row everyone in the same direction you are not going anywhere.

How does your single-video Gira in testa evoke the emotions you originally wrote for the single? What kind of emotions would you like to convey to people when they listen to it?

Gira in testa basically suggests to the listener not to bandage his head even before breaking it. Discovering yourself a little at a time without asking too many questions, weighing the person in front of you for what they are and not for what you want them to be. If you fall into this trap you are likely to lose the only chance you have available.

Guide us through your song writing process. Are there any particular things you want to share with us related to when you put together the songs for STESI SULL’ASFALTO, your debut EP as a solo artist?

I always start with a succession of chords while playing the guitar. I try to fix a sort of verse with a hypothetical chorus just to create a starting point by humming a melody. Secondly, I choose a topic or keywords around which to develop a text.

Is it important to you that all songs have a common thread or theme related to a certain period or are emotions driven by a certain logical chaos for you?

I simply let myself be guided by the moment, I don’t look for a link between the songs but it goes without saying that the base from which I start always reveals something deeply personal that often joins other situations.

What inspired you to write Ad Est and what is the message behind it?

Ad Est talks about a long-distance relationship and the message behind it is not to take yourself too seriously because after all there are many kilometers to travel and the imagination runs faster than the time it takes to get to the point.

How do you think the pandemic situation has affected your musical career and how did you overcome it?

BASTIANO project was born during the first lockdown just to keep the mind busy on new emotions to share. A daily exercise to dig into all those voices that I didn’t listen to too much.

What would you do now if it weren’t for your music?

I don’t know, I’ve never thought of a plan b. Writing songs keeps me connected to a parallel path where the direction is chosen based on the mood and experiences that are lived over the days.

As a musician, it becomes evident that there is a huge difference between the creative process and the business. Is there anything in the music industry that you would personally change?

It would be interesting to keep only the Bandcamp platform active, the only one to go against artists by giving them the opportunity to sell their merchandising to the potential listener.

What would you write inside a letter to your future self?

I would write to stay with my feet on the ground, without ever being influenced by the fashion of the moment. Reasoning with your own head listening to what good comes out of people’s mouths and setting aside those who pollute the air with envy and banal content.
