IN CONVERSATION WITH STEPHANIE CHEN

Could you walk us through the inspiration behind your latest collection, “fleu, FORMOSA”? What particular elements of Taiwan’s landscape or culture influenced your designs?

“fleu, FORMOSA” is the debut collection of my rebranded label, evolving from my earlier work FOR HER, which explored the balance of elegance, vulnerability, and strength. This collection reflects my personal lifestyle—shaped by both Eastern and Western influences—and expresses a woman who is feminine yet empowered. She values individuality, seeks refined quality, and embodies an effortless sense of luxury that mirrors her character.

In developing “fleu, FORMOSA,” what specific themes were you looking to mix, especially in relation to femininity and identity?

This collection was created at the intersection of my Taiwanese roots and my experiences in New York. I wanted to blend tradition with modernity and explore femininity as both strength and subtlety. The collection reflects a woman who is independent and quietly bold—someone who expresses her identity through details, balancing discipline with creativity, and heritage with individuality.

How has your upbringing in Taiwan shaped your approach to fashion design, and are there particular memories or experiences that you draw upon when creating your work?

Growing up in Taiwan and embracing other cultures has been an integral part of my life. It planted the seed for me to accept changes with resilience. I believe my hometown has taught me discipline, traditional values, and the importance of humility. These lessons influence the brand’s attention to craftsmanship and precision. Since I came to New York City eleven years ago for professional training in my design career, this city has taught me so much—it’s the complete opposite of home, nourishing my character even further and training me in critical thinking as an artist. I began to ask myself more questions: How can I innovate what I already know? What’s new, and what’s next?

You’ve received impressive recognition for this collection, including awards from the French Fashion Awards and the London Design Awards. How do you feel these accolades validate your creative vision and impact your career trajectory?

I think recognition in the industry is very hard to achieve nowadays, especially with everything being so accessible in the digital age we live in. Receiving accolades from organizations such as the International Awards Associate really helps validate the hard work that an artist or designer puts into creating new ideas.

Can you tell us how you interpret and portray femininity in your designs, and what messages you hope to communicate to women through your work?

‘Quietly bold’ is the new ‘quiet luxury.’

A woman who is selective about what to include in her closet for daily wear is the type of clientele we are targeting at FORMOSA. I believe that the way we portray femininity in this current collection—and in upcoming ones at FORMOSA—will focus not only on fit but also on uniquely tailored designs with significant fluid lines that make the garments bold and recognizable, yet not too loud.

Reflecting on the story of bringing “fleu, FORMOSA” to life, what has been your proudest moment or achievement throughout this process?

I am very proud to present Taiwan in such a bustling city like New York City. Being here for eleven years and still striving to succeed is an achievement in itself. I am excited to create more and introduce more people to my brand, FORMOSA, while also learning about my country.

As you look to the future, what aspirations do you have for your brand and upcoming collections? Are there any particular themes or concepts you are eager to explore next?

As mentioned earlier, we plan to focus more on the “Quietly Bold” aspect of the brand, making it more accessible at the Ready-To-Wear level, and refining our production process for better fit. However, we will still maintain the signature fluidity that defines our brand. The way the garments feel and fit on the body is just as important as the creative origins of the brand.
